Rebellion and our Health

My wife related to me the other day, how she was rebelling against her feeling that she should stop eating chocolate and cookies.  We both are slowly gaining weight over the past few years, despite eating very healthy fare and exercising regularly.  But, we love our sometimes glass of wine with dinner, and a bit of dessert at night.

I thought that term was interesting.  Rebelling.

Our country was founded on rebellion.  Compared to other countries we are a highly independent set of individuals.  Perhaps, in part this rebellious attitude contributes to the view by other countries that the “Ugly American” is crass, loud, and uncultured.

In Japan, it is said, “the nail that sticks out is hammered down.”  Perhaps, not entirely true.  However, in the US, perhaps, we celebrate the individual to a fault.

Perhaps our culture of individuality and rebellion is not so healthy for us.

Yes, we are a country of deep and celebrated creativity.  But, maybe we lose some feeling of connection, within this culture of rebellion.

Maybe we need a bit more balance between individuality, and realizing we are all on this path together.

I don’t have the answer here.  However, it strongly comes up for me that this deserves some further contemplation.

But, I really rebel against that.
