Anima, Animus, and Shadow Work

What does it mean to be male or female?  What is male energy?  What is female energy?  Is it a spectrum, a palette of colors that we embody through physical nature, mental identification, and perhaps, spirit or meaning in life?

Body.  Mind.  Spirit.

One way of looking at this is though Yin and Yang (pronounced “yawn,” the “g” is silent).  Not really opposites, but intertwined and complementary, one cannot exist without the other.  This can be represented by the classic Taoist taijitu symbol.

Yang, or male, energy is represented as the sun, bright, active, shining, activating, and toughness.  Yang generates and represents energy.

Yin, or female, energy is represented as the moon, passive, shaded, reflective, nourishing, and gentle.  Yin produces form, growth, represents matter.

But there is nothing that is only Yin or Yang, they always exist together, often cycling in a natural flow.  Shadow cannot exist without light.  The energy of life and creation in the Spring and Summer ends in the death and destruction of the Fall and Winter.  Cycles of life.

We all contain male and female energies, and this balance of energies may ebb and flow, across an hour, a day, a year, or a lifetime.

Jung labeled our unconscious archetypes of male and female as the animus and anima, which exist within each of us, and has great relevance to shadow work.  Some describe these archetypes as unconscious human instincts.

We contain both male and female energies or archetypes, and they can act as hidden shadows if they are not acknowledged.  Men often project their hidden anima, the perfect female, upon the women they meet.  Then within the natural imperfection of us all, that actual person can never live up to that projected ideal.

Ken Wilber wrote about the male energy as “f—k it or kill it.”  The female energy as “relate to it.”  I can not remember who wrote about these comparative examples of 2 guy strangers running into each other by accident on a busy street and then glaring at each other and stomping away, whereas, 2 woman strangers run into each other, become very apologetic, one makes a admiring remark about the other’s shoes, and then they go shopping together.

Remember the three emotions?  I wrote about them as “stances” toward life and objects.  Like a martial arts stance, this is how you interact with life at each moment.

1-Positive emotions are an attraction toward.
2-Negative emotions are a pushing away from.
3-The third emotion is ignorance.

If you experience very strong emotions, this is usually related to your ignorance of your hidden unconscious, the shadow.

Physically we can be male or female, but occasionally there exists intersex embodiments.

Our minds are less clearly male or female.  Elements of each exist in each of us.  And some feel they are one sexual identity trapped within the opposite embodiment.  Often we are confused as to how exactly should we act.  Are we acting with too much machismo?  Are we being too much of a girly girl, too much of a tomboy?  Are we not being tough enough?   Are we not being soft enough?

Whatever society we live within puts pressure on us to act in certain modes of being.  If we wish to act differently from what is expected, we may need to separate from certain sections of societies, our families, or current friends.

I don’t want to get into any arguments of what does it mean to be male or female, in body, mind, or spirit.  However, I will argue this is a very important contemplation for self-study.

Explore who you are.  Who do you want to be?  What does it mean to be you?  How do you want this comfortable ego cloak to look and act?

If you need references I would recommend Martin Ucik’s book “Integral Relationships,” as a source for further reading, particularly on being male in relationship with female energy.   Also, see my blogs on conscious relationships 1-5.

If anyone knows of similar books directed toward integral heterosexual women and homosexual relationships, please leave comments.  A review of Ucik’s book may point toward books that may help to inform us, but I have not read them.

On a lower level of spirit we can consider how our male and female aspects affect meaning in life.  On the higher level of Spirit, the male energy is represented as freedom and separateness, the meditating monk on the mountain.  The higher female energy of Spirit is represented as the coming together, the walking in the world, practicing compassion with each other.

Ultimately, there is only Source.  Female and male energies are simply the cycle of life within Source.

We are the living breathing, embodiments of Source, Spirit, All-That-Is and All-That-Is-Not.  Enjoy this Be-ing and Do-ing, however you create yourself.

There is Only Now

There is no future, only what we picture in our mind, right now.

There is no past, only what we imperfectly remember, right now.

Can we be here, here, here.

Right in this moment.

Each moment, strung together, as a string of pearls.

The Witness arises to watch thoughts come, and watch thoughts drift away.

Then even the Witness disappears.

Leaving Source.

Awake.

We Have Always Been Together

You meet someone and you have a feeling you have clearly known them previously, and you are also sure that you have never met before.  You might a have a “gut reaction” to them, either positive or negative.

You might get a feeling that you have known them forever.

Being manifestations of Source, we have always been together.  Only our animal minds tell us otherwise.

On the animal level we live and die, and have various relationships.  On other levels, we have been together, forever.  We can feel this as we become more open to these many layers of existence.

As we develop first a firm sense of self, and then later work on becoming a no-self.  We first develop a firm inner core of immutable strength.  Then over time our outer layers become softer, open to synchronicity, to connections that have always existed.

Now when we feel with presence and intuition, being more open, allows these messages of Truth and Beauty to arise.  We are open to the information flowing from the Universe.

We then act more closely within the flow of Source.

We are always already Truth and Beauty.

What is Your Preferred Pronoun?

I must be getting old.  Having dinner out with my 90 year-old mom and my 25 year-old niece, the subject of “preferred pronouns” came up.

Preferred pronoun?  That was a new one to me!

Language is a powerful, although imprecise, method for shaping how we think.

Apparently plural pronouns can be used in the singular.  They, them, theirs; for example, Leslie ate their food because they were hungry.  Really?  That doesn’t sound quite right to me.

However, recently, new pronouns have come into use such as ze, and hir; for example, Leslie ate hir food because ze was hungry.

Ze is pronounced like "zee" can also be spelled zie or xe, and replaces she/he/they.  Hir is pronounced like "here" and replaces her/hers/him/his/they/theirs.

We will see what happens with time.  Language does change, Ms replaced Miss and Mrs, over time.

Many people are uncomfortable with sexual ambiguity.  There was this old study of babies dressed in yellow, that is, not dressed in blue or pink to clearly indicate their gender.  Adults who did not know the babies were studied as they were asked to play with these infants dressed in yellow.  Invariably these adults would try to peek at the infant’s genitalia to try to identify their gender.  Presumably so they could interact with them in a “gender appropriate” manner.

I have noticed that the younger generations are much more comfortable with friends of various genders and sexual orientations, perhaps much more comfortable than most in my generation.

As a physician, and ersatz philosopher, I have had a long-term interest in the question of “Who am I?”  This phrase can also be used as a subject of deep meditation.

This question merges into important questions regarding self-descriptions of being heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, asexual, transgendered within both physical and mental states of being.

Most of us have read about the past horrors of too early surgical sex assignment for children with anomalous genitalia, or even a botched circumcision, most often mentally male children surgically made female, and then brought up as female.  Then as the child goes through puberty, if not much earlier, the strong realization for the child arises that they are clearly male.  Thanks to more current thinking, these cases are much less likely to occur.

A young patient recently told a colleague in clinic that they were “pan-sexual.”  Now that leaves a lot to the imagination.  Some of the other adjectives coming into use include, “bi-curious,” “heteroflexible,” “polyamorous,” and even more non-descript “wiggly.”

The vast majority of us firmly self-identify as male or female, and as heterosexual.  Current data is quite poor but estimates that about 3% of the population identifies as other than heterosexual, but this rises to as much as 15% in larger cities such as San Francisco.  I don’t know what the population data is on being transgendered.

If language shapes how we think, will these figures change over time?  Perhaps not such as bad thing, as Woody Allen said about bisexuality, it instantly doubles your chances for a date on Saturday night.

Interestingly, there is an undercurrent of androgyny that exists within spiritual traditions.  Celibacy itself leans towards androgyny.   The Shaman within several cultures have been described as being androgynous.  Similar stories are told within Zen Buddhism.

Within the Hindu mystic tradition Ramakrishna also known as The Great Swan lived as a woman for a while.

This could be a chicken and egg hypothesis, where an individual with a tendency toward androgyny, or homo-or bi-sexuality would perhaps find themselves pulled, or pushed, toward Shamanism or spiritual practice within their society.

Additionally, deep spiritual practices may lead someone towards more androgyny as they explore the unconscious shadows which include the opposite gender.

Interesting topics to contemplate, gender identity and sexual orientation, and relationship to preferred pronouns.

More on anima and animus, our hidden inner opposite genders, in the future.

Alone

What can we

Learn

Being

Alone

Boredom

May arise

Can we hear

More acutely

Our mind’s play

Our mind’s noise

Trying to

Fill in

The spaces

Between thoughts

Can we listen

Closely

To the

Silence

In that space

Between

Thoughts

What might

We

Find

Is Consciousness

In that space

Between

Nothing is Art within the Eye of Source

Hmmm… did I not just say the opposite?  Everything is art, beautiful, interesting.

Yet, Source is all one thing.  Everything that is, and everything that is not.  Within that realization there is everything and nothing.

Therefore, there is no one to appreciate, and label, beauty.

The quintessential paradox.

I wrote previously about beauty and ugliness.  How really above them all is True Beauty, the appreciation of All-That-Is, really the appreciation of being alive, and being embodied.

This can only occur when Source splits itself into “the 10,000 things,” the billions and billions of things.  Hiding and pretending to be separate things.

Source can then appreciate itself, as embodied within a rock, a tree, a sunset, a flower, a human being, a human doing, the creation of libraries and particle accelerators.

A wonderful unfolding of the entire Universe.

Just for a little pleasure, or pain, of being.

When we drop the doing, when we drop even the being, that is when we are closest to Source.

When we realize we are always already Source.

We taste the empty fullness, delightful, a gift, of being alive.
